Flank Milling Surface Design with the Least Square Approach

چکیده
Typically flank milling is used to machine ruled surfaces. In this paper, a method of designing doubly curved NURBS surfaces for flank milling using the least squares method is given. In this method, grazing points generated by the Bedi et al. [4] tool positioning method are used as sample points. The user defines the degree and the number of control points along two parametric directions of the surface. A NURBS surface is then fit to pass among the sample points using the least square technique [10, 11]. Accuracy of the surface is evaluated by the parametric error measurement method [12] and is controlled by increasing the number of control points. Surfaces that can be machined with great accuracy are generated. Examples are given to demonstrate this surface design method. Study on tool wear and surface roughness in end milling of particulate aluminum metal matrix composite: Application of response surface methodology
Metal matrix composites have been widely used in industries, especially aerospace industries, due to their excellent engineering properties. However, it is difficult to machine them because of the hardness and abrasive nature of reinforcement elements like silicon carbide particles (SiCp).In the present study, an attempt has been made to investigate the influence of spindle speed (N), feed rate...

Just recently Flank Milling has opened up new possibilities in detailing large-scale architectural building envelopes. Whereas examples such as the Hungerburgbahn by Zaha Hadid show the application of Flank Milling at the end of the architectural manufacturing process, our research, in contrast, focuses on the implementation of constraints immanent to manufacturing techniques as early architect...

In this paper, we give a detailed mathematical understanding of flank milling with flat end cutters, which we use to develop a method for milling with such a cutter. This method slides the cutter along two rails, providing two points of contact on the surface.

This paper presents a novel approach that automatically generates interference-free tool path for five-axis flank milling of ruled surface. A boundary curve of the machined surface is subdivided into curve segments. Each segment works as a guide curve in the design method for developable Bézier surface that controls a developable patch for approximating the surface with available degrees of fre...

This paper develops a new approach to solve the problem of interferences during the flank milling of a non-developable ruled surface. Many articles propose to modify the tool path to reduce this problem. A novel approach is proposed here, Computation of Adapted Tool Shape (CATS), which computes and optimizes the tool shape to reduce these interferences. The aim of this CATS method is to maintai...
